Damnit, CNN backtracked by changing their article.  Originally it was stated that he had traveled over 106,000 miles using only dead cats. 

Okay, Babelfish’s translation loosely seems to back up his story.  It looks like Bild simply added their own suppositions about dead cats.  He never seems to mention them.  Of course, having now looked at Bild I see that they’re a tabloid so this kind of embellishment doesn’t surprise me.

My favorite translated quote :

The cat strength can be computed theoretically accurately: From an attained full growth 13-Pfund-Kater 2.5 litres sprit could develop, four Miezen became for 100 kilometers to be enough, for a tank filling 20 dead cats would be necessary
