Okay, a woman I met at an AA meeting, we started discussing books, and she gave me a copy of
‘Running With Scissors’ a Memoir by Augusten Burroughs.

I had never heard of it, but it was a New York Times bestseller in 2002.

Anyway, I did not look forward to reading it, but since I run into her often and she is drop-dead gorgeous, I forced myself to open it.

Three nights later, I am nearly finished.  It is the most original, absurd, hilarious book I have ever read.  I laughed out loud at least five times!

And it is all true.

If you think your childhood was less than perfect, or your family not fully functional, read this, you will run to your parents and buy them each Corvettes or a Lifetime Starbucks certificate or something for being the gems they are.

Oh, I have that. It’s not my favourite book (or the most incredible I’ve ever read ), but it’s quite good.

A Man Without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut is one of my favorite social satires…. its a fairly new book (for kurt, anyway).

Yes, I am a Kurt Vonnegut junkie, I love his stuff.

Isn’t reading fun?  I love to go to bed about 9 every night and read for an hour, sometimes much later if the book is good.

‘Running With Scissors’ kept me up way too late!  But being from a disfunctional alcoholic family, and also passed off to live with others, I identified greatly with Augusten, except I did not start giving blow-jobs at age 13.

His sequel, ‘Dry’ tells of his quick success in New York and his battles with his own alcoholism.  It was also fascinating.

I am reading ‘Winds of War’ by Herman Wouk at the present.  His ‘Caine Mutiny’ was fascinating!  This is good, too, but weighted down with an awful lot of character development, there are four or five different stories, all weaving together as the war launches (I am at page 100 and Hitler just invaded Poland.)
