Drive-By Shooting Was A Hoax
Reported by Carolyn Suma (Denton, MD—WMDT) 9/1/2005
Maryland State Police saying yesterday’s drive-by shooting was a hoax. The officer made the entire story up…because he shot himself.
Police say William Foy attempted suicide when, at the very last minute, he changed his mind, and ended up shooting himself in the arm.
Foy originally told police he was shot by an African American man driving by in a white Honda on Route 404 yesterday. Police say a white Honda did drive past him but its occupants did not fire the shots.
Investigators say when the corrections officer was released from the hospital and questioned by police, his story didn’t add up. And he confessed to police he was the shooter.
In another strange twist, the shooting didn’t even happen on the highway.
“He stopped at his house, did this in the shed and he realized he made a mistake and he wasn’t going to tell anybody at first. He was just going to proceed like everything was normal,” said Cpl. Steve Hall.
Police say Foy drove about four miles from his home in Ridgely with the gunshot wound before the pain became too great and he called 911.
Foy is currently in the hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Criminal charges have yet to be brought against him.
