looks like some sort of giant hairy catipillar, but any further than that i aint got a clue.

Compared to the leg of that table in the picture, its pretty massive. About the size of a bird, it looks like.

Looks like a mix between an asp caterpillar and a hag moth (or monkey) caterpillar.

StartLizard is right, this really looks to be a hag moth caterpillar, also called monkey slug OR a puss moth.  Still images:  http://bugguide.net/node/view/452/bgimage
