This is unbelievable. Story here

Story by news.com.au August 09, 2013 10:27AM

IT WAS meant to be a striking symbol of hope and prosperity.

But a planning bungle of epic proportions has allegedly left a new skyscraper in Spain without a crucial element - an elevator capable of reaching the top, local news site El Pais reported, claiming to have sighted the building contract.

Yeah, I was reading that earlier.

The gist of it is that the plans were made for a 20-story building, but then they went ahead and more than doubled the height. The problem is that elevators that are big enough to fit such a building require much more equipment and such, and this was not taken into account.

It’s like scaling a go-kart up to a SUV size, and then realizing that not only will the engine not be enough, but that the plans don’t have space for the larger engine that is needed…

I guess there must be other examples of such incompetence. We should see if we can get a list of them.

I don’t think this is a place I would choose to live, no matter how hard they work to resolve the issues.  At this point I’d only be satisfied with a complete tear-down and do-over.

Oh don’t mind that wall.  It’s always been sliding off the building, but it hasn’t fallen yet!

Easy fix

Presumably they put in stairwells and an elevator shaft.
So, just make it a two tier system. One Elevator drops you on the 20th floor, you pick up a second on the twenty-first floor and go to the top (or near the top)

No problem

From the picture it looks like it’s nearly completed. I don’t think I’d want to trust them to put those in if it meant having to put in some reinforcement in the structure.

The problem being, elevators are not something you can just ‘slap in’. Even if they include the shafts, there’s a lot of equipment that needs to have various tolerances, blah blah…

Yep, that’s a good one for sure.  It doesn’t surprise me that the architects have resigned.  I am guessing it may be hard for them to find future business.

Maybe they can get work in North Korea.

Looks like I fell for a hoax. Or should I say http://www.news.com.au (the site I got the story from) fell for a hoax?

Details of the hoax here, on the MOH site itself.

This article has it as ‘mistranslation’. I call it lazy journalism.
