One of those things that are incomprehensible for “normal” people.

A Norwegian court has found that mass killer Anders Behring Breivik is sane and sentenced him to 21 years in jail.

Breivik admitted killing 77 people and wounding more than 240 others when he bombed central Oslo and then opened fire at an island youth camp last year.

He insisted he was sane and refused to plead guilty, seeking to justify his attacks by saying they were necessary to stop the “Islamisation” of Norway.

So the judge thinks he is totally sane and ok, just slapping his hand with 21 years*. So in one third of that time he´ll be asking for parole.

Well, not quite parole. They have a review process, every five years or so (after the sentence) in which the sentence can be renewed. Indefinately. So it’s likely he’s not going to just walk free, but come up before a board every five years. “You shot 77 people. Are you sorry for what you did?” “Not really, no.” “Ok, back into jail with you.”

And under Norweigian law, 21 years is the max sentence for any crime. So this sentence had nothing to do with what the judge was thinking. Parole is not even possible until 10 years into the sentence. Amazing what you can learn by just doing a little checking around.
