The image has been on Wikipedia since December 25, 2007 identifying them as being located in France. Via Google image search its use in OOPARTS* postings only seems to go back about a year raising the possibility of it just being a hoax to a near certainty.

Those stem segment fossils are beautiful.
Frankly, the leads to the identification were already in the comments with the article (even though right upon seeing the picture, my thoughts were “fossil!“and “that looks familiar” already). A bit of Google-skills from there did the rest. So no big feat from my part, really.

It is pretty obvious they are fossilized organic remains just by looking at them! (Who would use a helix designed gear? Really!) *steals biscuit. Adds Jelly and consumes.*
Actually,t he crinoids are circular, it’s the ammonites that are spiralled.
And actually there HAVE been irregularly-shaped gears.. they are/were used for changing speeds of systems where a more conventional transmission would be impractical.
