The Onion charging for content

I noticed The Onion has brought in a subscription thang for part of it’s content. I’m not working at the moment so I’ll put off subscribing until I get a job.

I’m just curious to see what other people think of this. I can understand paying a small subscription for an actual news service but would people pay for satire web site content? Admittedly the cost of the service doesn’t seem expensive for most people. But in my case as I said I’m not working right now so I can’t justify paying for it now.

I’m seeing a pop up window come up a few seconds after I open a video on the web site. I think the subscription is about $30 US per year.

I opened a video and saw nothing.  I also went all over the site and see nothing like that.  I know there is a store etc. but I just don’t find anything for a subscription.

A few possibilities here:

1) It’s a U.S. versus out-of-the-U.S. thing.

B) It’s not a real subscription, but a satirical one.

III) Peter needs to get a pop-up blocker.

I just saw it here. I enabled the pop up blocker in Safari and it still appears so maybe it’s not a true pop up.

Huh…I saw this thread earlier today, and I checked out the Onion myself at work.  I had the same thing as Peter, where when I went to view videos,  had a screen obscuring everything, saying I’d had my five free videos, and now needed to subscribe to see more.  I’ve had another look now that I’ve got home, and I don’t seem to have any problems with viewing videos.  I also can’t see anything in the FAQs or the like for paying to view content.

I just downloaded the The Onion app for both my iPad and my iPhone. I’ll sync them in the morning, I’m just too tired to do it now. I’ll see what happens after I do that.
