Hooo… just watchng the insanity that is the DoubleFine Kickstarter campaign.
DoubleFine is the small game studio that has brought some lovely indie hits over the years, most notably Psychonauts, with their head honcho having done some classic vintage adventure titles (Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango).
They have decided that they want to make a new adventure game, but the big studios just aren’t interested in it, so they’ve turned to the crowdsouce funding group Kickstarter.
They had no idea what they were in for.
The internet rose up as one being and screamed TAKE OUR MONEY. Within eight hours, the $400,000 goal was met. Within 24 hours, they had breached $1 million, and show no signs of stopping. They still have more than a MONTH to go on the funding drive.
I think part of the enthusiasm is that there has been discussion about making a sequel to Psychonauts. Notch, creator of Minecraft, basically said to DoubleFine ‘So, how much money do you need?’, which has galvanized the various online communities. By supporting this effort, folks are hoping there will be progress made towards Psychonauts 2, and they are probably right.
It’s a bold new era of game production, folks.
