It just makes common sense to use fakes, especially when one takes into consideration the rash of daily ‘smash and grab’ robberies that jewelers and gold dealers have been having on the West coast. Many shop owners have had to hire security to stand outside the door to discourage such thieves. (Though even that doesn’t always seem to work!)
(The evil part of me wishes there was some way to make the fake stuff faintly radioactive so that the perps could be found just by turning off the lights!)

(not counting Cherenkov radiation, of course, but if your perps are emitting that, then your problem is not finding them, but disposing of the bodies in a lead-lined container for thirty centuries)
