I did something similar, with epsom salts, as a kid.. only to find out that the hard water of our town really interferes with crystal growth.

I remember those. We used to get them for presents every now and then. I was much more interested in the Sea Monkeys because they were alive.

I did something like this long, long ago. It worked out okay for a little while, then some salt-resistant bacteria got into it and turned the thing into a green mess of ick.
