I am just learning about this now?!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpovwbPGEoo Some guy with a faulty designed Rubens Tube, explaining it. (You can see on the right hand side of the tube there is a gap)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEiEBEadZFI&feature=related Cut footage from the show Mythbusters, exploring the myth of sound waves able to put out fire.

I’ll let you search the rest of the videos on your own, seeing as how there is A LOT with the Rubens Tube and music.

Either way, being the slight pyro I am, I find this very cool, and neat.

I’ve seen the first video (and some of the related videos on YouTube) before.  I watched the Myth Busters episode when it was aired.

But still fun stuff.  Those are the kinds of experiments to show and explain that keep science fun, entertaining and interesting.

Yep. Reubens Tubes are nifty..

What’s really cool is doing it the *other* direction.. Pyrophones use a flame to heat air within a tube, causing resonant vibrations, and an eerie, howling tone… http://www.nothinglikedreaming.com/presskit/fireorgan.htm

Sadly, a lot of folks have what they cal a pyrophone, but it’s really just using the forced air/gas to play the tone, with the added visual of something going ‘fwoosh’ out the end.

The book/CD ‘Whirlies, Pyrophones and Gravikords’ has Pyrophones in their ‘haunting’ mode.. It’s nifty, like whale song. The other tracks range from the bizarre to the hysterically wierd.

Daxophone music: bizarre, but not without its charm. Very organic sounding: I imagine a bunch of strange little alien slugs having a whistling, hooting conversation…

of course, there’s always the Zeusophone… a tuned Tesla coil playing chiptunes..
