Oh, sure. I guess what I should have said is that what we usually think of as a doughnut (the texture and the hole in the middle) originated with the Pennsylvania Dutch. Or so I’ve read. I’m not speaking from personal experience.
When I was in New Orleans in January, I had a New Orleans beignet and a French-style beignet (that’s what the lady who made it said it was anyway). They were really quite different—I was a bit surprised, though I’m not sure why.
