The interporn is slow tonight. Happy Easter all.

Highlander just came on the telly. I know I saw it last week but it’s like hearing an awesome song on the radio- it might be on the CD in the player in your car, accessible at the push of a button, but you still listen to the radio version just because it’s on the radio, and you want to make the most of that fact.

Let me ask this- who is Rick Shapiro? Is he famous in the states?

Because I saw him get booed off stage at a gig on Saturday. He was atrocious. No jokes, or anecdotes or punchlines, just being foul and being a dick. And not even in the context that would allow it to be funny, he was just being an asshole on stage. And he was so wasted he had to write his routine on his arm, and as he got frequently confused he started on the same ‘joke’ about three times (I guess it was written rather prominently on his hand and kept catching his eye). When he realised he was in trouble he broke the Golden Rule of Stand-Up: insulting audience members.

Making fun is OK, but the moment you start actually insulting people in a nasty way, you lose. And the audience were baying for blood when he started that stuff. We convinced his manager to get him the hell off (she was a dick too) but he refused and kept going. So we killed his microphone, and then he got the message and pissed off. Stormed right out. The poor compere looked like a rabbit in the headlights going up to save the whole gig after that travesty.

I’ve never seen that before. I went to the official afterparty of the whole festival and met a lot of people who’d been on the comedy circuit for years and none of them had seen a guy get the chant of “OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF”. That moment was so good if it was a person I’d take it home and have sex with it.

Please, Americans- who is Rick Shapiro, and please assure me he isn’t popular there.

Never heard of him, Renquist.

And if he is the same Rick Shapiro as on IMDB it offers no more help.  Because, unfortunately, I never saw Pootie Tang in which he possibly played “Shakey”.

ETA: Here’s his Wikipedia page.

The name sounds vaguely familiar, but I’m probably thinking of the guy from the OJ Simpson trial.

And it sounds like ignorance is indeed bliss in this case.

Someone said he had a TV show over there and everyone was pretty well horrified at that concept. And he does NOT improvise, unless that’s an euphenism for reading off your forearm. And I doubt his Fringe debut was ‘impressive’ unless the adjective is used in reference to the amount of bottles I assume were thrown at him.

That wiki page is fatally flawed in so many ways.

Bleah. I’ve sure as hell never heard of him. He may have a couple gigs here or there, but he’s sure no headliner. Guy sounds like pure rectal tissue.

‘Rave reviews’ for his UK debut? You must’ve either caught him on the worst day of his career, or he slipped the reviewers a few grand.
