Has anyone else been watching this show? It’s on HBO in the U.S. I’m not sure how long it’s been playing down there, so this is probably old news to those south of the border from me. I think they have only shown two episodes so far up here in Canada.

Anyway, the show is an absolute riot, even if it’s kind of hard to explain. It’s a comic duo from N. Zealand who are in a…..digi-folk(?) parody band. The premise of the show is that they have moved to NYC to try and get gigs and I suppose, hit the bigtime.

Does anyone else here watch the show? What do you think of it?

Yah, I love it!!  Only two episodes in the US too (though the third is tomorrow!).  At first I thought the musical scenes were a little weird, but now I’m really enjoying it.  It’s just overall—odd.

I’ve also been watching the other new HBO show John From Cinncinatti.  As soon as you figure that show it it turns everything on it’s head.

HBO tends to put out some really good series, and I’m excited for the two new ones.

I haven’t heard about John from Cinncinatti, I’ll have to keep my eyes open for it.

The first musical number threw me off too. I’m not a fan of musicals in general (tho there a couple exceptions like Mary Poppins and Nightmare Before Christmas) so I was a little skeptical of whether or not I’d like the show.

But then…....

then….....

then came the robot bit!

And I was in love LOL

The Robot music video was the best!!!

I’m kind of enjoying the musical parts, but sometimes I think they go on too long.  Like, a 1 min song would be better than a full 3 minutes on the same topic.  It’s funny at first, but after awhile I just want them to get to the next scene where something actually happens.

Then again, I’m a huge fan of musicals and operas.  Basically, anything where people are singing and I’m mesmerized.

John From Cincinatti has had 3 episodes so far, I think.  It’s about a family of three generations of famous surfers.  But, it’s really weird.  I mean, everything seems perfectly normal, but then there are little weird things that happen.  The grandfather, every once in awhile (I think it’s happened twice) just for a few seconds floated like 6 inches above the ground.  And then there is the character of John who appeared out of nowhere.  He looks normal and all, but he acts like he doesn’t know anything about anything and repeats things people tell him.  Plus he can pull anything out of his pockets.  In other words, if you say “hey, is there $50 in your pocket?“ he’ll pull it out, etc.  It’s really weird but I’m really enjoying it so far.

The funny thing about me is that I love opera, but can’t stand musicals - at least not the traditional Broadway type ones. I’m not sure what the line of distinction is for me, maybe because I like the music in opera, but the broadway songs just sound cheesy to me usually? I really don’t know.

I know what you mean about the bits maybe being too long. I could have sat through 10 more mins of the Robot thing, but when they did the Pet Shop boys spoof in the second episode, I felt they could have shaved a bit off, even though I thought it was a riot.

And it made me mad that my mother lost the cashmere tartan scarf she bought me in Scotland.

My hubby has downloaded Flight of the Conchords but I’ve yet to watch it. I have the World Comedy Festival 2003 on DVD and they’re part of that. I didn’t really like them all that much the first time I watched it, but after second and third viewings, they kind of grew on me. I must make time to watch their new show…

Okay, so it turns out that John from Cinncinnati is being shown up here as well. I found it under, um “HBO Titles” in our On Demand. Only three episodes so far, but I watched one last night and the other two just now.

I’m hooked!

I’m glad to see Ed O’Neil working again too. There was always something about him I rather liked, Al Bundy notwithstanding.

And the guy who plays John looks so much like an ex boyfriend of mine, I keep reading the credits just to reassure myself that it’s not really him LOL

I didn’t really watch much of Deadwood, just a couple of episodes, but the dialogue between the three “hotel denizens” reminded me of it.

One thing that is kind of annoying is that some of the acting is really bad, especially the kid and to a lesser extent, Kai (if that’s how it is spelled). There were a couple moments watching scenes with the kid where I felt that maybe the poor acting was kind of on purpose, that maybe his detachment had some deeper meaning to the character, but I’m really not sure.

I’m waiting for a type of epiphany like I had when I saw Batman Begins. I think Christian Bale is uber-talented, but I was perplexed during some scenes in the movie because his acting seemed sort of strained. Then it hit me - DUH! Christian Bale isn’t a bad actor, Bruce Wayne is. He’s awkward in his role of playboy billionaire bachelor because that’s not really who he is!

Something tells me that ain’t gonna happen in this show though, ah well. I still really like it.

PS Rebecca DeMornay is looking rather rough ain’t she? Is that what dating Leonard Cohen does to you?

The most recent episode of Flight of the Conchords was the best yet.  If I was being mugged and my assailant made a talking heads reference, I would just hand everything over and then invite them out to talk music.

LOL

Yeah, it was a good one smile

I hate having to wait for new episodes though. I think I like it better when I discover something after it’s already been running for awhile. Then I have an entire season to watch all in one sitting from On Demand.
