Pet Sounds was a good album, but other than that the Beach Boy’s annoy me.

Me, too. What is the deal with all those passionate love songs to cars anyway? And guys in their 20s or 30s or more should NOT ever have sung, much less thought of, “Be True to Your School.“

But they are definitely significant in the history of rock and should be mentioned. I can appreciate “Good Vibrations” even if “409” kind of makes me go “Huh?“

Hey it wasn’t all about the cars and surfin’, they also objectified women as objects of men’s lust.  mad

Yeah—gosh, how unprecedented—but they were a lot more passionate and considerably more explicit about the cars.

It was the 60’s, they couldn’t be as explicit about their beach babes.  Besides, cars and chicks just went together.  Like summer days and gnats.

That explains the lack of explicitness re. girls but it doesn’t truly explain the passionate lyrics re. cars. Consider, for example, the following lyrics, which are from “Cherry Cherry Coupe”:
“The wildest short around is my cherry, cherry coupe
It’s the sharpest thing in town and the envy of my group
It’s one of its kind and it really looks good
Chopped nose and deck with louvers on the hood.

“Go cherry, cherry coupe now
Go cherry, cherry coupe now
Go cherry, cherry coupe now
(My cherry coupe beats ‘em up coming off the line)
Go cherry, cherry coupe now
(And she really gets sparks when she starts to whine)

“Chrome reversed rims with whitewall slicks
And it turns a quarter mile in one oh six
Door handles are off but you know I’ll never miss ‘em
They open when I want with the solenoid system.
...“

And so on. I have no idea what a “chopped nose and deck with louvers on the hood” might be, nor why it’s good that “she really gets sparks when she starts to whine,“ nor what a “wild short” is, precisely, but don’t the Boys sound pretty darn head-over-heals here? Or, now that I think about it, lustful? Considering it’s about a car?

Honestly, I think I’m just too much of a girl to get it. I know that there are undoubtedly women who feel…well, I don’t know about this passionate about their cars but fairly passionate, but…it’s not really the norm, you know?

I always assumed the car songs were euphemisms for women.

No doubt there’s some sublimation (if that’s the word I want) going on here, but doesn’t “Chrome reversed rims with whitewall slicks” seem to express genuine and authentic yearning? For whatever a reversed rim and a slick might be. (Chrome and whitewall I can manage.)

Almost pornographic, really. And they danced to this stuff at sock hops, or so I understand…
