Well, “I Don’t Want to Grow Up” was a cover the Ramones did of a Tom Waits song, so you got it covered!

  I didn’t even make the connection!

Okay, I think I may have to go with Jockey Full of Bourbon. Maybe. Or perhaps Yesterday is Here.

I left the Misfits out of there too.

I could have missed it—so much good stuff here (in addition to stuff that is, frankly, not exactly to my taste, but so what?)—but I think somebody should mention Aretha Franklin. So how about: “Chain of Fools.“

Also, on the more bluesy side, how about:
“Whipping Post”—Allman Brothers
“I’d Rather Go Blind”—Etta James
and since we’ve got to have Ray Charles (right?), how about “I Got a Woman.“

Sorry, I’d have to rate “Georgia on My Mind” highest among the Ray Charles tunes.  And if you say Willie Nelson’s version is better I’ll simply have to hate you.

As for the rest of these, I’ve heard perhaps half of them.  Which is rather surprising, actually.

Sorry, I’d have to rate “Georgia on My Mind” highest among the Ray Charles tunes.

Can’t quibble with your choice. I just picked one of the many good ones and “I Got a Woman” came to mind first, but certainly “Georgia on My Mind” is a fab song as well.

I usually don’t have much of an opinion on music since my tastes fall somewhere in the 10-30th percentile for most people.  It’s sad how many of these ‘greatest rock recordings of all time’ I’ve never even heard of.  But happily there are a few on there that I like, or at least have an opinion on to disagree with.  For instance, I’m not sure ‘Seasons In The Sun’ counts as a rock song, it’s more of a sappy ballad.  Though I do like it.

To be absolutely honest, I find “Seasons in the Sun” so sappy that I think it should be poured over pancakes rather than listened to. (Though there are definitely sappier songs…much much MUCH sappier.) But since this topic is “greatest rock (or pop or blues) recording of all time,“ not “Kathleen’s choice for greatest rock (or pop or blues) recording of all time,“ I am acting all tolerant.

Have we mentioned the Beatles? I can’t remember. Because surely we must. Even if you don’t like them (though I do, I do), you have to admit their importance to rock music, so how about “Revolution”?

P.S. Ooh, I see we have at least one Beatles’ song mentioned—“Penny Lane.“ Also a good one. But “Revolution” has always been one of my favories.

And only Razela mentioned the Beach Boys, though it was a good one.  I think their influence on the more modern rock sound is probably second only to the Beatles.  Pet Sounds is a classic example.

Pet Sounds was a good album, but other than that the Beach Boy’s annoy me.
