It's now starting to happen accidentally... so we know it's possible. How long before science is able to do this on purpose? Immortality can't be far away... but do we really want to live forever? Never ending Shakespeare and Mozart types might be nice, but with it also comes never ending Castro and Bin Laden types!!!
The article also says that she's come close to death thrice and has a variety of serious medical conditions. If I had to live like that, I'd just want to grow old and die.
Well I doubt anyone, like you say, would "stop" the aging process at that stage. Probably more like 25 or something... that's probably about where'd I'd choose if I could.

I can't bring the site up, now, but *any* story related to extra-longevity has got to be a hoax, or at least a temporary misunderstanding. Folks, we all have to face our own mortality. If it weren't so, due to our proclivity to reproduce, the world would be seriously overcrowded, and very soon. We don't have enough resources for all the living humans on Earth now, as it is. World population is expected to double within the next 50-60 years, even given the current rate of death. Would you want, or want your offspring, to live in a world in whch the average human lived over 100 years?

Sorry, I just checked a couple sources, and found my stats were wrong by 2X. World population is expected to double in 100-120 years, given currant birth rates, and allowing for significant fluctuation. Gee, wonder how the HMO's will deal with that? Not to mention Social security and Medicare, here in the U.S. Hold on to your hats, fellow baby-boomers - it's going to be a wild ride. And for you GEN X and Y and whatever they're calling young adults, now, don't count on *anything* but yourselves. Sorry!

The problem is not that the Earth's population is so large that we can't produce enough food. There's lots of surplus food thrown away every day, and plenty of unused farmland. And we haven't really even begun tapping into the oceans' resources. The problem is in the distribution of the food. Too many people don't have access to enough of it because they're too poor, or live in some place too isolated, or they crowd too many people into one little region so local food production isn't enough to cope. If we could get those problems sorted out, then we could have plenty more people on Earth (plus also probably reduce disease, poverty, etc.).
Even so, living forever would doubtless get rather boring eventually. Either that, or you'd get so overloaded with memories that your brain would shut down.

Accipiter - You got it right about the distribution problem, and yes, it's an unevenly distributed problem itsself, worldwide. That is the reason why excess population becomes a problem. We keep growing in overall net number by thousands per day, but our capacity to evenly distribute available food, potable water, and medicine, among other resources, is not expanding in ratio. Don't know about you, but I'll be glad not to see 2050.

What is the point of continuing to live your life if you are just going to die and lose all of your memories? The logical choice would seem to be to pursue immortality. Don't worry about the population WAR will take care of that.

Weak people have trouble with the idea of living forever and the idea of not living long enough, maybe mommy and daddy made them feel to important. What is the definition of suicide anyway?
We're talking about immortality and they can't even make an article that lasts two months?

Yeah it was simultaneously yanked!!! Do you think "THEY" want the medical and pharmecutical industries being put out of business? A lot of "THEM" get their personal fortunes, with which to run the world, from these very industries!!!
Radical life extension is likely to happen within the next 25-30 years. With all the breakthrough going on in Biotechnology and nanotechnology we could wipe out the major causes of death at old age. This would only increase life expectancy by 15 years or so but life extension is going to happen regardless of whether you want it to or not.

Life is great and you incredibly lucky to even be born. The future is going to be great and its not going to stay the same. Your parents or grandparents may have lived similar lives but the 21st century is going to be radically different and fast paced. Technology is growing exponentially and we have so many things to look forward to.
There is so much to see on this universe. You have to think big and not just about whats here on earth. There is so much out there and you wont get to see it ever if you die. You must try to live to see real rejuvenation therapies.
