Apparently, your mutt can detect bladder cancer just by sniffing - so when
he starts checking around that area - don't be embarrassed - it's for a good
reason.
There's a progam somewhere here in the US that is working with dogs on detecting cancerous skin cells. I wish I could remember where I had seen it (on TV) but I don't at this moment. Very interesting, anyway & doesn't seem to be a hoax.

I've seen that ^ on Unsolved Mysteries...not the most credible source in the universe, but it does appear that there's at least some semi-legit research going on about dogs detecting cancer. Whether it actually works is another question entirely.
You can do a lot with 220 million nosebuds. That's 45 times more powerful than the human nose, by the way.

The Chinese "barefoot doctors" apparently also used trained dogs for pregnancy testing for this same reason; The dogs can pick up the changed pheremone output in a pregnant woman. However, ELIZA tests are so much faster these days that the dogs are being replaced.
