I've never actually used a soda can for this, but I've started fires using shiny surfaces to focus sunlight. And if you use a mixture of peanut-butter and DEET repellant instead of dry twigs, the fire won't go out if it gets a bit wet.

...You could use anything, as long as it's abrasive I guess. They said it would just take minutes...but I doubt that depending on how far you are from the sun.

I do use a pepsi can as a stove though, comes in sooooo handy and it works like a charm. I do it everytime I use my smoker.

All you have to do is Cut a Soda can in half. Put a piece of paper or something flammable in it. Then, poor alcohol in the can...don't have to fill it up all the way. This little stove burns for a while and will get a fire going. Just stack up some wood or something over it.....P.S. If you are a drinker going camping, Everclear works just as well.

I just carry a cute little kit a friend of mine made me... In a tin of Altoids, he burnt some cotton cloth to charcoal it, added some flint and a loop of steel and some hemp rope. I love that kit, I can get a fire going in seconds & the kit is so small it is easy to carry.

S: just make sure you charcoal the cotton squares... it makes a perfect spark catch, which will in turn catch the (untwisted) bit of hemp rope. Just make sure you have your twigs ready to catch off those.

Yeah, I carry a little fire kit too. It's called matches. They come in a little box & I just strike one on the side. If I leave it at home, there's always the cigarette lighter of my car.

Once, in 8th grade Biology, I was moved to the rearmost corner of the room...furthest from the teacher's desk. I was quiet, so she thought that translated to "good". One day I took a lighter (no, I didn't smoke, but they were handy to have), and burnt a piece of paper, it was just a little larger than a 3x5 card...I lit it, and it went up and was gone in seconds. I stamped the ashes into the carpet. The (stupid) girl next to me raised her hand and said she smelled something burning. The boys sitting near me KNEW what had happened, but she didn't. The teacher came over, smelled around and looked at me. She never said if she knew it was me or not. I excused myself to go to the bathroom...but instead tossed the lighter into my locker & got all trace of the ashes off my shoe.

8th graders are dumb. wink When I was in 8th, one day we were in art class using rubber cement. I used half the class making a ball that was about 1.5-2" in diameter, then popped it into my teacher's coffee while he was out of the room. (he did drink it when he came back...somehow??)

Then I set him on fire.

(Left for keeping on topic's sake, one of the above statements is untrue.)

Talking of fires, I think I can smell one now! big surprise

If I don't post again, you'll know that our building has burnt down...hang on, the fire alarms aren't going, so the smoke must be coming in through the air conditioning. mad

It could have been the bushfire down the road from me Smerk! I had been thinking summer was far enough gone to end the bush fire season but unfortunately it wasn't. I had trouble reading my book yesterday coz the bloody water bombers were flying so low to my house. Damn them for trying to put out the fire in such a noisy manner!

Find any dead divers in the trees after the water-bombers left, Nettie?
