I've been noticing that comments have been wandering off topic quite a lot lately, meandering into pages and pages of random chat. Which is great that people are having fun, but I've also been getting complaints from people who think it's too much. I honestly have no idea what to do about the issue. I've been guilty of ignoring the site a bit lately because I've been so busy (got to get the book done by June 1, and that's my top priority). So any solution that requires time on my part isn't going to happen right now.
But I thought I'd raise the issue. Any idea how to address it? Better forum software would be one possibility (but not until the book is finished). Or maybe there is no problem. Thoughts? Comments?

There should be a "Last comment posted by", so that we can tell if we were just somewhere. |

No...b/c this one is from Alex, as a site update thingy. Maybe change the title - Alex's Off Topic Comment Thread...or something. |

Then again, his name is under who posted it. Maybe we're just easily confused Boo.
My friend's board has a last posted by thingy. This way I can just take a quick scan down the page to see if there's a comment that I missed, or one I need to reply to. |

I freely admit I've not read all the comments on this thread, so possibly someone's mentioned this already--and of course it probably would entail a software alteration and cost bucketloads of money for you, Alex, so of course take this with a grain of salt.
It just occurred to me that subfora (or subforums, as the non-Latin types like to say) would be a really good solution. We could have one section called, say, "Hoax Verification", one called "Interesting News Items", and one for "Random Chit-Chat", and any other potentially-interesting ones that occur to you.
Looking over the huge OT thread just now was greatly confusing, I thought. If there was a separate forum for that, however, comments on Winona's fascinating avatars and random jabs at different posters wouldn't be all muddled together, and it would make for greater clarity.
Just a thought, though, and probably not a feasible one... |

Katherine, subfora is a good idea, and I'm going to look into that when I have time... which unfortunately is only going to be in June. There's a lot of good forum programs out there. I think the site really needs something more robust. |
