Off Topic Comments

I've been noticing that comments have been wandering off topic quite a lot lately, meandering into pages and pages of random chat. Which is great that people are having fun, but I've also been getting complaints from people who think it's too much. I honestly have no idea what to do about the issue. I've been guilty of ignoring the site a bit lately because I've been so busy (got to get the book done by June 1, and that's my top priority). So any solution that requires time on my part isn't going to happen right now.
But I thought I'd raise the issue. Any idea how to address it? Better forum software would be one possibility (but not until the book is finished). Or maybe there is no problem. Thoughts? Comments?

...Well, that one went off topic fast. In a normal thread, I would give it 5 or 6 posts before I SAY something. After that, it's up to the MOHers to stay on topic. When 70 more comments appear that are off topic...that's a bit much. |

Other than this...how many times have I gotten rid of a non-SPAM post or thread? I'm just trying to reign things in. I just felt like things got really wild really quickly. Heck, my shirt is always unstuffed. (Whatever that means.) Though, I have a feeling that this will not be an issue going forward.
Like I mentioned before, not all the comments were deleted. Some were simply closed. I wanted to be sure & save links, so that if someone wanted their links back to reuse them, they could. |

I like the idea of an off-topic thread.
It would probably be easiest to create a new off-topic thread every week or so. Or create a new one whenever the current thread gets over 8 pages, or something like that.
Old off-topic threads can be closed so no one can keep posting in them, but there's no reason to delete them. There might be something in there someone will want to read in the future.
So anyway, people can go about their business as usual, posting in threads as usual, but when conversations start wandering we can tell people to move to the 'off-topic' thread. If they don't, then comments start being deleted (to encourage them to move).
I'd rather not create any kind of yahoo chat group because I think that would ultimately drain people away from this site. |

I think the "off-topic" thread is going to work the best for everyone.
I thought about that issue with the chat group, Alex, I shouldn't have even brought it up, sorry. |

It seems like the main problem with an off-topic thread that is deleted every week would be that many people wouldn't get a chance to read what was posted at the end of it. I don't really know much about how these things work, but would it be possible to have the thread run for a week, then somehow freeze it so that nobody could post on it but could still read it? Then a new thread can be started where people could post, yet they could still look back on the previous thread. And when a thread gets several weeks old, it could be gotten rid of altogether, or filed away in some dark corner, or whatever you do with old threads around here. Would something like that be possible, or am I dreaming up computer capabilities that don't really exist? |

I tried to stop Meagan earlier Alex....I was like, ummm, NO, don't delete those threads, and she was like, shut up, I can do what I want. Then I was like, It's not right Meagan, going on this warpath is wrong.
She had complete disregard for her fellow people. She then offered me a bribe, yep, I said it, a bribe. I told her that it wasn't moraly right. She then began to curse at the GOD's. She was a complete mess Alex, you should have seen it! |

That's exactly how it would work, Accipiter. The thread would just be closed to new comments, but still visible. |

Thanks, Alex.
This should work well with those of us who are at work, too.
Although, y'know, technically we should be working, I suppose... |

The KEY word is "Could", not "Will". Besides, it might ruin my appearance. |
