What I told Stephen was that there was no age limit, because I couldn't think of any way to enforce one. What would I do? Ask people how old they are? Under age people would just lie.
Parts of the site are definitely 'R' rated, particularly this forum. I don't let anything 'X' rated on the site. Most kids probably encounter R rated adult conversation either at home, or on TV or the radio (especially if they have HBO, etc.) |

Charybdis commenting on Stephen: I don't know what Alex was thinking when he made him a moderator. Alex must be losing his edge.
LOL. Stephen's role as a moderator is to be the 'bad cop', like Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon, the guy you're never sure whether or not he's going to go completely insane. I already had a bunch of good cops, so I needed at least one crazy cop. Hairy would qualify as crazy, but he's not keen on using his powers. Stephen, on the other hand, really likes using his powers. The trick is just keeping Stephen reined in so he doesn't go completely overboard. |

Stephen going overboard and changing a bunch of my posts one day is basically the reason I don't respond to him much.
No, it IS the reason I don't respond to him much anymore.
I used to enjoy the silly-ass banter we had going, but now I'll only respond if he's making a good point. And sometimes just to pick his ass. |

Hmmm...
I'm not a member here, so I wouldn't know--exactly how much personal info is asked when you sign up for an account? |

Does an email addy count as "personal information", then? And what exactly is a "commercial website" and what is not?
But then, of course, all the ickle kiddies could still post anonymously...unless you want to disable anon posting, which I personally think is a bad move. |

Alex, First amongst Equals, said: "Hairy would qualify as crazy, but he's not keen on using his powers". I can't say I agree with all of that. First, I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell. I definitely am not keen, that much is true. I do, however, use my powers quite frequently. As a matter of fact, I'm using my Long-Distance X-Ray Vision as I write this. BTW: That shirt you're wearing, "Oh, my". It's not you. Burn it. |

HEY...
How come there have been some entries selectively removed from this conversation??? I don't remember there being too much that would need it!
The one I'm really missing is the statement about the Cowboys having ANY season much less a good one and then I added...
GO COLTS!
GO COLTS!
GO COLTS!
Alex, you aren't a Chargers fan are you? I hope not... |

Oh crap,
I just found it...
Guess I should have opted for sleep last night instead of sitting up ALL night watching movies...
My apologies, I really am going on 1.5 hours sleep here... tonight should go well at least! |

In the following order...
-Spanglish
-Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (Part 2)
-Sideways
-Ladder49
All were good but was dissappointed with the ending of Spanglish and Ladder 49. |

...I know I'm going to regret this later.
I agree with Stephen. I think it takes a village to raise a child. This particular "village" seems a little beyond for kids. REGARDLESS of the level a child thinks they can comprehend information. I don't care if every other word was smuth & SF knew how to define them all, and use them 'grammar appropriately'.
I have no doubt that SF is capable of understanding what's going on, or that she has seen all of this stuff at home, on T.V., or in her friend's bedroom. I think the point Stephen was making was more or less, 'Now that we know...it it okay to let it keep happening.'
There's not really a whole lot you can do to keep kids from changing their DOB to keep from being on a site, but I think the ones that do, have just proved themselves to be as immature as we think they are.
Every kid thinks they're smarter than the average bear, so they belong with adults. It's a different world emotionally, physically, and psychologically. Even though some people here ACT like kids, they're still adults. Time has moved them into adulthood at the same rate that every other person moves into adulthood.
Look at the chavs thread. It's a perfect example. |

and you know thats what I mean, no ever kid under 20 is the same, and judging someone by their age just makes it worse, and let it keep happening? What do you mean, even if Alex kicks me off the forum that won't restrict me from still reading what you write, it doesn't even keep me from posting |

I'm not JUDGING anybody. Calm down.
I'm not even sure if you read my whole post, b/c my point was that in my own OPINION (which I'm allowed to have), it takes EVERYONE to look out for our (our= city's, country's, world's) children. Would I want MY kid to read this site? Sure. Comments & forum? No. So, if I knew your parents, I would be sure to ask, "Silent Fish's Mom & Dad, how do you feel about your child reading jokes about sex & tampon tea?" I'm sure the response would not be, "Well, we talk about that stuff at the dinner table all the !@#$&$( time, let's ^#$*(#*$# talk about it some #&%&$ more!"
I'm an adult. Acting like one and BEING one are 2 different things, but BEING one means that I'm allowed to talk about what I want, on what sites I want.
You being a child means that your parents are still in charge of everything you do. Technically, you have no say in what you would like to do. It's up to your parents. I feel like this causes undue liability to fall on Alex. Suppose your parents see something they don't like & blame it on Alex not filtering it out, or putting up a warning. If you have signed up as a member and lied about your age, that nullifies Alex's liability, so go ahead & lie.
Age doesn't make you the person you are, but it gives you experience to be the person you are.
I don't want flame wars to erupt over this, but since the thread was already off topic some, I ran with it. Yes, it is I who destroyed your sweater. Watch it unravel, you'll soon be naked. |

This forum is basically entirely open, which makes it very hard to stop children from visiting it. The membership stuff I do have in place only really serves the purpose of making things slightly easier for frequent visitors: so they don't have to fill in their name, etc. every time they post, so they can have an avatar, and so they can start new threads without having to have them moderated first. If I had to come up with a system to prevent underage kids from visiting here, I have no idea how I would do it. |

Oh, and it is possible to block people from visiting this site altogether. They get redirected to yahoo, or something like that. I've done that with some spammers. All that really means, however, is that they would need to find a different computer to view the site. |
