i always understood it to be that you were considered american enough to be president if and only if you, your parents and your grandparents were all born within the confines of Camp America. personally i think the cast of 'Will and Grace' should be in charge. in character, of course. |

Technically, you only have to be born in the U.S. to run. Practically, you have to be Christian, white, and without a strange-sounding name. We'd also prefer you to be Protestant, thanks. |

Huh? If you have to be born in the US to run, how the hell did George Washington swing it?
Not to mention several preidents afterwards... |

Um, George Washington was a native American, wasn't he? That wasn't a novelty back then. |

Ohhhhhhhhh, I now understand what you're saying. Very clever. I guess technically they should have waited 35 years before they elected the first president. Gosh, does this mean that the first president's don't count! |

Ah, Martin Van Buren was the first valid president! From now on, it will be Buren, D.C. |

The first valid president was John Hanson, elected by the Constitutional Congress to the office of "President of the United States in Congress Assembled" on Nov. 5, 1781... before Washington was president, before the Constitution was drafted, and therefore before the rule about only US-born people being able to serve as President. |

Alex- you are truly a Man of the World such as myself, Raoul, The Man of A Thousand Positions. How is it we have not met? We must meet at Cannes this year. You will know me by my Chariot of Fire, in which I shall arrive triumphantly. Watch your toes, if you are curbside, for I have extra-wide mudflaps for Spring. Rrrraoul |

Just validating what Alex said
except I think there were something like 8 or 9
Presidents before Washington
Most of them are signataries to the Constitution |

Washington and all other founding fathers were born in North America. GW born in Virginia in 1732 (?) so what's the question about their validity? Is it because they were born in North America before it officially became the U.S. of A.? How exactly does this stipulation to the Constitution read? Depending on your interpretation of the stipulation they might be valid, they might not be, or perhaps there was a "grandfathering" clause like when they raised the drinking age from 18 to 21. Those of us already drinking at 18 were allowed to continue while others not already at 18 had to wait until 21... anyone else old enough to remember that? |

All these things are of no consequence to me, Raoul, The Man Who Waits No Longer, for I have been given notice of the return of my Chariot of Fire. I am to be reunited with my beloved Satellite at Midnight, tonight, in but a few short hours. This I have been promised by those who held her against my will, most assuredly with the collusion of that dog, HH. For this he shall pay. Rrrraoul |

I think banning "ferriners" from being president is really just silly, imo.
There are plenty of people out there who would make a decent president, if such a thing exists, except for that they were born out of this country. But then, I'm a foreigner too, so I'm not sure my opinion on this counts...I don't even have citizenship yet. |

Wasn't the top dog at constitutional meetings always called "President," because he presided? Many people have been called president, but I don't know if that really makes them president, unless the government recognizes it. They were presidents, but not presidents in their current meaning, right?
And also, we've had Emperors and Kings but none were recognized by any governments. |
