Fake camera tickets in California - Hoax by the police !

At least 11 cities in California are sending out fake camera tickets, to get
you to identify the driver, so that they can send the driver a real ticket.
(The fake tickets don't have a court's address on them, as they have not
been filed with the court! Therefore, they have no legal weight and should
be ignored.) It's a great hoax - most people, not having heard anything
about it in the press, fall for it. And, while the fake tickets are fully
bilingual, I think that those not as familiar with American courts (and such
things as the 5th Amendment) are much more likely to be hoaxed.
El Cajon, El Monte, Emeryville, Encinitas, Garden Grove, Hawthorne,
Inglewood, Maywood, South Gate, Stockton and Vista are sending out fake red
light camera tickets. San Jose sends out fake speeding tickets.
As of March 2005 there is a bill in the legislature (SB 466) to allow speed
cameras all over the state. If it passes, it will be effective Jan. 1, 2006.
Huh. Looking at them, I fail to see what's fake about them.
They're sent out to get you to identify the driver of your car at the time a traffic violation happened.
"This notice has been sent to you because a person driving a vehicle registered to you or your corporation committed a traffic violation in the City of El Cajon. You are to identify the driver of the vehicle by completing the section below."
Doesn't seem to be fake to me, and the website's viewpoint seems a little... skewed.

My dad gets those all the time. He has one of those toll passes, but pulls a trailer, and about half the time, the pass doesn't "pay" for the trailer, and he gets a thing, "Someone driving this vehicle has failed to pay a toll on -- Road."
To fix it he just stuck one in the trailer to ring up on it's own.

If "Boo in the Land of the Haggii" is actually in California, his inability to tell the difference between a real ticket and a fake will end up costing him, or a friend, $400.
By the way, since my last post, additional cities have started issuing the fake tickets. They are: Bakersfield, Gardena, Poway, San Jose, San Mateo, Santa Ana, Santa Clarita, Union City, and Upland.
Also, while SB 466 (photo radar tickets) didn't make it through the legislature during the 2005 session, it can, and probably will, some back in January 2006, a month and a half from now.
