An atheist such as my self couldn't care much less about how Jesus lived; in today's world, all that I think is important is how people think he lived. I would think that the early Christian church would obfuscate the years of Jesus's life to suit themselves, anyways; and I would think that every Christian power since would distort history to suit themselves--it's simple politics.

Rod, "theological reality" rather ties in with Citizen Premier's opening comment: Theology is the study of a religion based upon its manifestations, writings and ramifications. There is no actual need to believe in the religion one studies in theology per se, but the rigor of academic study still applies. Comaparitive theoleogy is the further study of several religions to ascertain patterns of difference and similarity.
And Citizen Premier, you cannot be an atheist as such cannot exist; "Athiest" means literally "Without a belief system", and if you believe strongly that there is no valididty in religion, then you _have_ a strongly-held faith, don't you? |

But if none of it can be proved to be real, where is the "reality"?
Don't you recognize humour?
Next you're going to tell me that "military intelligence" is not an oxymoron, either. |

And I don't know where you got your definition of atheist, because every single definition I have seen includes the fact that an atheist does not believe in a god or gods.
NOT just "without a belief system". |

I took a couple years of ancient greek in high school, and I don't think the original meaning of atheist is 'without a belief system.' Theo is greek for god (from which you get names such as Theodore... gift from god). Atheist would simply mean 'without a god'. |

Today I think it means "without a mystical belief system." If you want to join an atheist club, you usually can't believe in luck or spirits or the like. |

Burning books is not illegal, idiot. Our governments just don't engage in that activity anymore simply because it would evoke images of Nazi germany and because they're trying to avoid censorship issues. |

There _has_ to be a good punchline here, but I can't think of one. Blast my lack of wit! Maybe we fall under the "no matter who you are" part of their welcome? |

Oops! It omitted the first line:
--ponders the United Church of Christ ad beside all these atheist posts--

Yeah, I clicked on that ad, just to see what it was all about.
I don't think it's surprising at all that a commercial calling everyone but themselves racist bigots did not make it to the air.
And the Bonsai Kitten one comes up every once in a while too, just like the "shroud thread" has an ad which pops up every once in a while proving the shroud is real. |

I'm sure that no european governments would involve themselves in book burnings any time soon; but I don't see why it would be illegal to fuel a bonfire with your most hated books, provided the fire didn't get out of hand. There's nothing illegal about being a Nazi or any kind of bigot in America. |

I burned CDS once. I couldn't sell them & I didn't know anyone who wanted them. Some of the CDs had those little leaflets in the front of them that tells you the lyrics & who wrote what...That's sort of like a book.
Also, I tore pages out of old fishing magazines to help start a fire...that caused really prettily colored flames. |

Ack! They say it's bad to burn plastics, as it releases carcinogens into the air. |

I don't know about books, but I tried to burn catalogs and a magazine, once. They don't burn well unless you tear them apart and crumple the pages so that air can get in the spaces. If you leave them whole, they just burn on the edges and the center is untouched.
And the inks and glossy paper make a really bad stink, almost as bad as plastic, and with blue and green flames. |

If you want (a very unsafe) but really pretty fire you can do like we did a few years ago... we had some rocket engines left over from the summer, so we spent a lovely evening cutting them up and burning them in a campfire. We had all kinds of gorgeous colours including the nicest purple. |

On the (off topic) subject of cool looking fires, take some powdered cinnamon and throw it at a flame some time...
It CAN be done inside, but it's not exactly safe. Doesn't stop them from doing it at the bar, though. |

Isn't that cardinal just a LITTLE late? After all, the book's been out since 2003! Timing is everything! |

I am almost done reading the Di Vinci Code. This is such a great Book!! I knew I have been right all these years about the Church. Some people do require FAITH just to make sense of their existance. |

I read that about a year ago. The guy who wrote it is making so much money from it, it's unbelievable. And initially a lot of publishers turned down his book because they thought it would never sell. |

I can tell that in this Christian based country, it would have been a huge risk. Im sure that when Cardinals started complaining about this book, it increased sales again! Thats when I bought it. I think people need a fresh perspective on their religion. |
