Either someone didn't like her and wanted revenge, or a way to get some kind of personal info. Maybe the guy has been stalking her, and thought that if he comforted her, he might have a chance to have her.

Maybe an appropriate punishment would be to make him face her husband when he comes home. Stephen is onto something I'm sure as this guy definately had a motive... it's just hard telling what it was.
