Flashy gold jewellery (hooped earrings, thick neck chains, sovereign rings and heavy bangles); 'prison-white' trainers (so clean that they look new); clothes in fashionable brands with very prominent logos; and Burberry check baseball caps: the British phenomenon of chavs, townies, call them what you will.
Chav women, the Daily Mail wrote recently, 'pull their shoddily dyed hair back in that ultra-tight bun known as a "council-house facelift", wear skirts too short for their mottled blue thighs, and expose too much of their distressingly flabby midriffs'.
And now there's a website dedicated to tracking this not-so-new phenomenon...

Update: There has been a great (as in notably large in size) debate regarding the specific status of Chavs, Neds, Townies...etc. It is apparent now, that this world of people DO exist. sorry team, have been away since sunday and unable to help translating! the chavs have been communicating via their school computers- this implies they are all under 16, no chav would stay at school longer than they legally have to. theyre all far too busy stabbing people. i would like to make the point that i do indeed hate chloe, shellie, tori, holly, kayley, k8y and all the others. i am confident that i will not gain any negative karma points of any kind, because chavs have no value.
incidentally, having recently befriended a glasweigan (resident of glasgow, scotland), i can shar with you the delightful eytmology of their term, 'ned'. Its an ancronym. for Non Educated Delinquants.

I've been to that webby, but to be honest, I thought there was a difference between chavs and townies... aren't townies the ones who are into high street gear and are slightly above chavs? Ok, or chavs are those who live council houses.

i think (and am by no means certain) that 'HOW MN' is an abbreaviation of 'how minging' or just 'how ming', 'minging' being a chav word usually used to describe unattractive people, but which has been heard to simply mean 'bad'. Hence the message addressed to Myst reads
Myst, I don't care if you don't know chaver words because i don't like you as you hate us and you are obviously a want-to-be if you want to learn things about it, how disgraceful! Get a life you gay girl!
I would normally be tempted to say it means 'man', meaning nothing in particular and used in the way you Americans are all so familiar with. But that doesnt really make much sense in this context.
