Flashy gold jewellery (hooped earrings, thick neck chains, sovereign rings and heavy bangles); 'prison-white' trainers (so clean that they look new); clothes in fashionable brands with very prominent logos; and Burberry check baseball caps: the British phenomenon of chavs, townies, call them what you will.
Chav women, the Daily Mail wrote recently, 'pull their shoddily dyed hair back in that ultra-tight bun known as a "council-house facelift", wear skirts too short for their mottled blue thighs, and expose too much of their distressingly flabby midriffs'.
And now there's a website dedicated to tracking this not-so-new phenomenon...

Update: There has been a great (as in notably large in size) debate regarding the specific status of Chavs, Neds, Townies...etc. It is apparent now, that this world of people DO exist. For information on why/how Chavs are/are not cool, scroll through the following posts. Otherwise, another post regarding why/how Chavs are/are not cool is probably not necessary.

How can i join the Campaign for Coherent English?
A thought occurs. If the language skills of the average chav deteriorate far enough, maybe they will be unable to function in normal society and just become extinct! Perhaps high voltage or poison warnings should be written in particularly high-brow words to help speed this along? |

I got lost on ardslass's comment. Have decided that it a poster can't be bothered to spend the time to write properly why should I bother to spend the time trying to translate it?
All I got from it was that she's a northern irish grill and she eats steaks.
She also wears airmax training shoes. I believe these are called airsoles, or is that the people that wear them?
I couldn't be bothered with the rest.
Anyone notice how the only chavs with any language skills whatsoever, minimal though they be, seem to be girlies? |

I'm astounded! It looks like it took no more than half a dozen posts for the chav brigade to start in on this site - much as they haunt the 'chav of the month' boards on chavscum (postin there own pics coz they is wikkid an luv 2 have ppl abuze them...)
How do they do it? Are there teams of chav researchers haunting the blogosphere in search of site referencing chavs? Is there a global conspiracy?
I've noticed a recent emergence of chavs in Prague, incidentally, one place I thought (hoped!) would never have them... |

Maegan doesn't even want this thread. I never even heard of a chav or any of those other names. All I seem to understand about them is the way they spell and they come from the UK or something.

Go ahead and kill the thread as far as I'm concerned. I only wanted to plug the chavscum site in the first place because it's pretty funny (though if you don't have chavs wherever you are it might not appeal... oh, and you're damned lucky, too).

I am a chav and so r ma m8s, we just hang out together and have a laugh. I do admit we don't like goffs coz they don't like us but so wot! i think that makin websites about us totally not cool and its mercuri man. why do u lot h8 us so much? theres nowt wrong wit us.
The chav/townies/pikeys wot eva u wanna call them, the style is great. Burberry 'i rate it' man. oh, and havin clean, white reebok classics is betta that dirty trainers. plus its a fashoin statemate. I think pikeys r so the bst and will b 4eva so u lot betta get used to it. |
