Flashy gold jewellery (hooped earrings, thick neck chains, sovereign rings and heavy bangles); 'prison-white' trainers (so clean that they look new); clothes in fashionable brands with very prominent logos; and Burberry check baseball caps: the British phenomenon of chavs, townies, call them what you will.
Chav women, the Daily Mail wrote recently, 'pull their shoddily dyed hair back in that ultra-tight bun known as a "council-house facelift", wear skirts too short for their mottled blue thighs, and expose too much of their distressingly flabby midriffs'.
And now there's a website dedicated to tracking this not-so-new phenomenon...

Update: There has been a great (as in notably large in size) debate regarding the specific status of Chavs, Neds, Townies...etc. It is apparent now, that this world of people DO exist. Is there any truth that the root of 'Chav' comes from the town of Chatham in Essex? For you yanks that would be pronounced 'Ch-avvam' by the local yokels.
And we can stop using 'Neds' as a derogatory term because that term is reserved for the fine midlands band known as Neds Atomic Dustbin - for those of you with an interest check out their single "Kill your Television".

'chav' was orignally a romanov (gypsy) word meaning 'boy'. it is from the same language that we get 'pikey' meaning man. the words kind of migrated due to the similar tastes in dress and stealing things. |

Chavs, skunners whatever. They seem to be infiltrating all classes of society. They make me sick. They steal hubcaps from second hand minis, beat up old ladies for their fish and chips and worst of all, wear their trousers inside their socks.
This is a beautiful poem written by up and coming chav superstar about the issues faced in day to day life.

Seriously Hannah if you expect people to take you seriously then don't act like you have the language skills of a kindergartner. You'll find the English language will serve you a lot better if you use it properly.

better having labels than no labels -- Fashion companies make a lot of money on people too stupid to realise that labels don't matter. They can make a bomb on selling their cheap trash at exorbitant prices to people who don't know any better. If your label is actually worth the price I congratulate you on finding what is probably the only one in the country worth the name.
