A micronation! This is v popular among the terminally bored. People declare their bedrooms, houses, trailers, desks, etc 'micronations'. Molassia was one of the first that got media attention, i think there was some controversy over the bloke raising a Molassian flag every morning. A handy guide can be found here:

The Republic of Talossa is not a hoax, at least it is not meant to be. It is a community of people who have their own country, mostly active online, claiming a small piece of downtown Milwaukee as their national territory.
