About the Museum
The Museum of Hoaxes is dedicated to promoting knowledge about hoaxes. (Click here for opening hours, etc.) On our blog we post about dubious- sounding claims, and whatever else strikes our fancy. The site is also home to the Hoaxipedia (the museum's online encyclopedia of hoaxes), and the Hoax Forum.

The museum was created in 1997 by Alex Boese. He's assisted by a staff of deputy curators and docents. Alex is the author of three books, most recently Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (which has nothing to do with hoaxes). Check out the list of the Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time for a preview.

#59: Chewy Vodka Bars
In 1994 Itar-Tass reported that an alcoholic beverage company had invented a new kind of candy sure to be a favorite with the Russian people: chewy Vodka Bars. These bars, designed to compete with Mars and Snickers bars, would come in three flavors—lemon, coconut, and salted cucumber. The same company was also said to be perfecting another new product: instant vodka in tea bags.

Salted cucumber? As in pickles? That's ironic, pickle juice being a hangover cure.

I really don't know why they HAVEN'T made this. I mean there's tiramisu for precedent and a huuuge market. The things would only be like half a shot anyway.

Alcohol evapourates when baked. Tiramisu made have flavour, but very little content.

Vodka is flavourless. (Well, when taking it straight, as far as I recall). The chocolate bars would have to contain actual vodka for it to do anything, in a manner similiar to the alcoholic chocolates we have now (the hollow chocolates filled with some sort of liquid).

From an economic standpoint, the price of a candy bar (with the increased costs) would not withstand competition in that market, compared to boxed chocolates.

Of course, anyone is free to start up a business and prove me wrong, I have a year to go to get my economics degree. raspberry

I think that that would be good - but then also bad: BUT a good idea, that I reckon would make good money.

Yes, alcohol may evaporate when cooked, BUT, what they can do, is make a Vodka Jelly, or filling, that doesnt need cooking/baking, and then insert that into the soft candy/jelly sweet.

There is a sweet in the UK, that is a bug, and in the centre is a jelly/soft centre, and it is great! Imagine that with a bit of alcohol?

Yummy!!!

I've made vodka jelly before, so it is possible. Not sure about those flavours though

Soviet soldiers stationed in Cuba in the 1960's and 70's used to make their own alcohol bars. They would buy old stale baguette bread loaves (Cuban brad is similar to French bread) and split them lengthwise. Then they would coat them with the shoe polish that the army provided them for their boots which contained ethanol. The loaves so coated would then be placed shoe-polish side down on top of the barrack's tin roof under the hot tropical sun. The heat of the tin roof would evaporate the alcohol from the shoe polish into the bread loaf and the soldiers would then scrape off the polish and eat the alcohol-soaked bread.
