About the Museum
The Museum of Hoaxes is dedicated to promoting knowledge about hoaxes. (Click here for opening hours, etc.) On our blog we post about dubious- sounding claims, and whatever else strikes our fancy. The site is also home to the Hoaxipedia (the museum's online encyclopedia of hoaxes), and the Hoax Forum.

The museum was created in 1997 by Alex Boese. He's assisted by a staff of deputy curators and docents. Alex is the author of three books, most recently Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (which has nothing to do with hoaxes). Check out the list of the Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time for a preview.

#32: Space Shuttle Lands in San Diego
In 1993 Dave Rickards, a deejay at KGB-FM in San Diego, announced that the space shuttle Discovery had been diverted from Edwards Air Force Base and would instead soon be landing at Montgomery Field, a small airport located in the middle of a residential area just outside of San Diego. Thousands of commuters immediately headed towards the landing site, causing enormous traffic jams that lasted for almost an hour. Police eventually had to be called in to clear the traffic. People arrived at the airport armed with cameras, camcorders, and even folding chairs. Reportedly the crowd swelled to over 1,000 people. Of course, the shuttle never landed. In fact, the Montgomery Field airport would have been far too small for the shuttle to even consider landing there. Moreover, there wasn't even a shuttle in orbit at the time. The police were not amused by the prank. They announced that they would be billing the radio station for the cost of forcing officers to direct the traffic.

I've heard the Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw radio show replay this several times. I get a kick out of it each time!! If you didn't know it was a hoax, you'd believe it too!

This one was almost as good as one they did a few years earlier. They reported that a device could be purchased at Radio Shack that, once connected to their radio and television, would allow listeners to also see the broadcast.

Not amused, Mark? Sounds like you need to lighten up a bit.

A radio station in Vancouver, Canada did this same prank about 10 years ago, saying that a space shuttle was being diverted to Vancouver International Airport. Thousands of people made their way to area where they could view, and the radio station was broadcasting from the site. You can't even imagine how hilarious it was when they announced over loudspeakers and live radio that it was for April Fool's lol.

just last april fools dave said that the migrating butterflies where actully extremely rare and if one of the set up points saw that there were marks of the butterflies on your windshield then a 120 doller fine would be instated.

One of the best days in San Diego Radio. I was working close to Montgomery field that day, and we all howled at the losers waiting there for the shuttle to land at on the runway barely big enough for single props.

guess you had to be there. and by the way,

Lighten up Mark.....

Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw asked listeners today if they had a time machine, what they would go back in time to witness. One listener said he would go back to see all the people gather at Montgomery Field on this April Fool's Day prank. Sure enough they replayed the bit again for those of us that missed it. Pretty funny.

I actually fell for this one. I got to Montgemery Field almost right away (I had been on my way to work)and commenced sitting on the hood of my car waiting for the landing. Man, did I feel had. It was great.

I loved that prank. It was incredible how many people fell for it. Another great prank was the semi-truck carrying Shamu that crashed or jack-knifed near Sea World. People were asked to bring buckets of water to keep the whale wet.

I hate to admit it... and I REALLY didn't belive it... until I was driving by there on the way home from work that morning.... I saw the crowd and though... "Jeese... I guess it IS landing!!!!" Went on home to watch the news and couldnt find it ANYWHERE (imagine tha!). Felt like a COMPLETE BONE HEAD when I realized WHAT was going on!! LOL STILL listen to those guys EVERY morning!!

Ah yes, I remember it well. They even had Chainsaw as the "Guy from NASA" to give them all of the info. My favorite was always the Friday calls from Nick Aragua to convince bosses to let an employee have the day off. LOL

I was on my way to work that morning, and I worked adjacent to Montgomery Field in San Diego. I heard the thing while jammed in traffic near Montgomery Field. I was laughing so hard I was crying in my car. You could see other people in other cars laughing too, in the traffic jam. I found a radio at work and we all listened to it. They had someone work up "Mission Control" and made it sound really believable. It went on for more than an hour. It is my favorite radio bit ever.

On the TV news that night, one of the local stations had made it to the airport and interviewed people leaving. There were college students who skipped midterms to go see the shuttle land and people who put up beach chairs on the local roadways to sit and watch the landing. Traffic in the area was a complete snarl for a couple of hours afterward, and the San Diego police were none too happy about it.

A station called KGB-FM? Methinks these two deejays will be killed by "simultaneous hunting accidents" in which they will shoot each other in the back of the head with "standard-issue Soviet Army rifles."

Rilap Oflos....you are retarded. Oh yeah, This was a great prank! I remember my neighbors telling me that i could ride with them if i wanted to. They didnt realize it was a prank and i wasn't about to ruin the fun. LOL

I was working in the newsroom of another San Diego radio staton...less than a mile from Montgomery Field...we were flooded with calls from people complaining that we were missing the "shuttle landing story!"

A quick check on-line revealed that there wasn't even a shuttle mission underway at the time...But when we passed that fact on to callers, some just refused to believe it was a prank.

Eventually, of course, a reporter went out to do a story on all the folks who fell for it.

Regarding the call letters KGB, don't forget that Ted Gianoulis's character was known as the KGB Chicken, before he took it on the road. He had to change it to the San Diego Chicken once he left.

I was in San Diego from 92 to 2005. I listened to DSC on KGB (and later Rock 105) almost every morning during that time. I didn't go to see the space shuttle land but heard about it on the radio and of course the fallout afterwards. Too funny.
