#38: Operation Parallax
1979: London's Capital Radio announced that Operation Parallax would soon go into effect. This was a government plan to resynchronize the British calendar with the rest of the world. It was explained that ever since 1945 Britain had gradually become 48 hours ahead of all other countries because of the constant switching back and forth from British Summer Time. To remedy this situation, the British government had decided to cancel April 5 and 12 that year. Capital Radio received numerous calls as a result of this announcement. One employer wanted to know if she had to pay her employees for the missing days. Another woman was curious about what would happen to her birthday, which fell on one of the cancelled days.

If they were ahead 48 hours, shouldn't they be adding two days to allow everyone else to catch up, not skipping two days?

Ben is correct.
Thinking hurts, so a table is in order.
If its April 15 in Britain then it's April 13 in the rest of the world.
Observe what happens if Britain adds two more April 15's:
Britain: 15 15 15 16 17
World: 13 14 15 16 17

Further, if Britain skipped two days:
Britain: 15 18 19 20
World: 13 14 15 16
Britain would now be 4 days ahead.

California stopped having September 11 since 2001 Both September 10 and 12 each are now 36-hour days (half of previous 9/11's hours [12 hrs each] ADDED to the 10th and 12 days)

Reminds one of when the Gregorian calendar system was introduced they dropped 10 days to bring the calendar back into synchronization with the seasons. (Previously, they had no leap years). There were riots in Paris where people died because they thought the Pope was stealing 10 days from their lives.
