#28: Wisconsin State Capitol Collapses
1933: The
Madison Capital-Times solemnly announced that the Wisconsin state capitol building lay in ruins following a series of mysterious explosions. The explosions were attributed to "large quantities of gas, generated through many weeks of verbose debate in the Senate and Assembly chambers." Accompanying the article was a picture showing the capitol building collapsing. Many readers were fooledand outraged. One reader wrote in declaring the hoax "was not only tactless and void of humor, but also a hideous jest." Nevertheless, in 1985
The Science Digest named this as one of the best hoaxes ever.

Dear Creator
I enjoyed reading this april fool's day joke. Where did you get this brillant idea for a joke? I thought that it was so creative. I wouldn't have thought of this. Thanks so much. Enjoy creating more April Fool's Day Jokes.

I think it's great funny! Someone took themselves too seriously to think it was "a hideous jest". I mean, come on, politicians are always jibed at for being full of hot air, why not take it this one step further!

That was funny! I was thinking of using this on my radio show.

The reason why nobody found it funny is because the Wisconsin State Capital Building collapsed once killing many people during its construction in the 1880's.

Nice fake for the time. With the advent of Adobe Photoshop today, anyone doing that joke could really make it gory! LOL!

This could best be termed ill-timed. The Great Depression had brought the production of humor almost to a standstill by 1933. Except for a very few high profile jokesters like Amos & Andy, Will Rogers, and the Marx Bros., comedy had pretty much disappeared from daily life. Much like the "War of the World" prank five years later, this item probably found Wisconsinites totally unprepared.

The timing of this imaginary collapse of the Wisconsin legislature is interesting, although I'm sure it is coincidental.
The German parliament was the victim of arson within days of this hoax. Of course, the burning of the Reichstag was most certainly NOT a hoax; it gave Hitler the excuse he needed to suspend civil liberties and establish the totalitarian horror of the Third Reich.
