About the Museum
The Museum of Hoaxes is dedicated to promoting knowledge about hoaxes. (Click here for opening hours, etc.) On our blog we post about dubious- sounding claims, and whatever else strikes our fancy. The site is also home to the Hoaxipedia (the museum's online encyclopedia of hoaxes), and the Hoax Forum.

The museum was created in 1997 by Alex Boese. He's assisted by a staff of deputy curators and docents. Alex is the author of three books, most recently Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (which has nothing to do with hoaxes). Check out the list of the Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time for a preview.

#8: The Left-Handed Whopper
1998: Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

I could have saved them a lot of money!
All they had to do mas make an ambidextrous whopper. That way they would only have to rotate the condiments 90 degrees not 180 degrees. This would save a lot of time!!! };~)

LOL, great thinking Rick!

The Left-Handed Whopper is a great joke too. Reminds me of the Ren Faire I used to go to in Mass, there was a store that sold (every year) Right handed mugs and Left handed mugs, right-handed on the right side of the store and left-handed on the left. Until I actually stopped and looked at the things (to see that it was simply which way the cup handle was pointed) I totally thought that was a cute idea.

A left handed Whopper? Now that was one heck of a talented advertising guru that came up with that one. I work in the advertising field myself - doggone it I wished I'd thought of that one. LOL
