About the Museum
The Museum of Hoaxes is dedicated to promoting knowledge about hoaxes. (Click here for opening hours, etc.) On our blog we post about dubious- sounding claims, and whatever else strikes our fancy. The site is also home to the Hoaxipedia (the museum's online encyclopedia of hoaxes), and the Hoax Forum.

The museum was created in 1997 by Alex Boese. He's assisted by a staff of deputy curators and docents. Alex is the author of three books, most recently Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (which has nothing to do with hoaxes). Check out the list of the Top 20 Most Bizarre Experiments of All Time for a preview.

#99: Virgin Cola’s Blue Cans
In 1996 Virgin Cola announced that in the interest of consumer safety it had integrated a new technology into its cans. When the cola passed its sell-by date, the liquid would react with the metal in the can, turning the can itself bright blue. Virgin warned that consumers should therefore avoid purchasing all blue cans. The joke was that Pepsi had recently unveiled its newly designed cans. They were bright blue.

Cool. An industrial "attack" disguised as a hoax.

I find it funny that on this here particluar comments page both Virgin Cola and Pepsi are mentioned, but the google ad is for Coke.

Why would they do that? The marketing move, I mean. If it's for money, then it's pretty stupid. My opinion. I hope you see that this is my opinion.

what's stupid is that people actually believed it.

Somehow it's very Richard Bransonish. Funny and market penetrative at the same time. If your Virgin's balls have gone blue avoid...

there's a dumb ad out now with 'diet pepsi' doing a movie and they have 'diet coke' come in as it's 'stunt double'. this ad just gives the opponent a free plug, AND makes it seem the competition is the COOL,tough one that can take it. all in all, it doesn't achieve what they meant for it, whatever that was.

Kind of funny. Never heard of Virgin colas before, but yah to them for beating up Pepsi. Pepsi tastes like crap! Look how they have to get huge stars for their commercials to try and dazzle the public. Ooh, look! Jessica Simpson (or whoever) drinks Pepsi so I'm going to drink it too. Meanwhile Coke just does its own thing in commercials and keeps on selling. Why? News flash--it tastes better! Just like Pizza Hut hiring Jessica and releasing gimmicky pizzas while Papa John's has its founder in the commercials. Not exactly a sex symbol, but the pizzas still sell. Though if Papa John's isn't careful, Pizza Hut could make a comeback. PJ's service is really slipping in many areas. But then, Pizza Hut sells Pepsi products, doesn't it? Ahh.... tongue wink
