The April Fool Archive

Nat Tate    (April Fool's Day - 1998)

On the eve of April Fool's Day, a lavish party was held at Jeff Koons's New York studio to honor the memory of the late, great American artist Nat Tate — a troubled abstract expressionist who destroyed 99 percent of his own work before leaping to his death from the Staten Island ferry. At the party, David Bowie read aloud selections from William Boyd's soon-to-be released biography of Tate, Nat Tate: An American Artist, 1928-1960. Critics in the crowd murmured appreciative comments about Tate's work as they sipped their drinks. What they didn't know is that Tate had never existed. He was the satirical creation of William Boyd. Bowie, Boyd, and Boyd's publisher were the only ones in on the joke.

Mock culture at it's finest.

This is probably the best one I've read so far...it's such a statement about people who try to be "in"...now we see just how many are fakes!

This was on Sky One when they were talking about hoaxes, they went quite in depth.
It was hilarious, they had a "picture of him" which was taken from a photo album Boyd had bought on a street corner.
As for the paintings, Boyd drew them all

That is a hilarious way of playing an April Fools Day joke and highlighting elitism in all of its fake-glory.

Not a fan of Bowie but I tip my hat to him and his fellow pranksters! Genius.

Oh, this is delicious. And as for all the 'yanks', we're probably too busy laughing to comment about how this 'sux.'

Hey! I'm a 'Yank'...and we do have sophisticated enough humor to laugh at these type of jokes. I was hoping they set up a "Nate Tate" fund to sponsor his memorial dedications
