Hoaxes, mischief, and misinformation throughout history
I knew retailers did this: marking items on sale, when the sale price is actually the regular price. Now retailer Suzy Shier gets slapped with a fine for doing it.
A white witch plans to cast a spell that will coax the Loch Ness Monster into making an appearance again.
Fake Fags. It's not what you think, unless you're British.
Mainline Airways was attracting lots of customers by offering super-low fares to Hawaii. But it turns out there was no Mainline Airways. Only a website created by a teenager.
Here's a picture sent by a visitor to the site named Dorothy. It's titled 'Manitoba Home Security.'
The Chicago Tribune on the McDonald's Whole-Wheat Hoax. Apparently, and contrary to McDonald's belief, dying white bread a caramel color does not make it "whole wheat."
Nonprofitabletech. A software company dedicated to raising lots of venture capital money.
Redbook draws fire from Julia Roberts for putting a picture of her on its cover in which a recent image of her head is pasted onto an old picture of her body. Ironically, the title of their article about her is "The Real Julia." Redbook also recently got in trouble for doing the same thing to Jennifer Aniston. The problem, of course, is not in their use of composite images (everyone does that), but in doing such a poor job of them.
Apple introduces the P4 Laptop in order to compete with Microsoft's iLoo.
If you missed the Ghost In A Jar thing on eBay, Reason Online provides a summary of it. Unfortunately the original ghost in a jar page has been pulled from eBay, though it's been archived here. But now the Ghost in a Jar has its own weblog on LiveJournal. And of course hundreds of ghost-in-a-jar imitations are now flourishing on eBay. And there's even an entire website devoted to ghost-in-a-jar stuff.
