April Fool's Day, 1936
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin ran a story about the discovery of a Viking ship in Hawaii, accompanied by a picture of the ship. Of course, while some believe that Viking explorers reached as far west as Minnesota, it is doubtful that they ever arrived in Hawaii.
The Philadelphia Record ran a picture titled, "Deep Sea Monster Visits Philadelphia." Although modern viewers will probably have little difficulty in spotting the picture as a fake, it evidently fooled a number of the Record's readers.
